1987 - 96m.

Unrelated sequel to the slasher original starts in 1957 when slutty Mary Lou Maloney (played by the pretty Lisa Schrage) is crowned prom queen and accidently burnt to death by her jealous prom date (who caught her cheating on him after all...). Zip to thirty years later and good girl Wendy Lyon who's attending the same high school. Not long after opening a trunk in the school's basement (which contains Mary Lou's vengeful spirit or some such hokum) she starts having all sorts of messed-up visions. Eventually she becomes possessed by Mary Lou herself and sets-out for revenge on those who killed her years prior (that includes steady character actor Michael Ironside who's now the school's principal).

Instead of the slashing of the first film this goes for supernatural horror (and introduces us to a villain they'd use in the next entry as well) and it's a fully enjoyable time with a pleasing genre script that contains subtle humour, decent dream sequences and likeable enough characters. Sure there's a low-scale Carrie-esque finish but this is an entertaining sequel that manages to be better than the original, has lead Lyon doing well in her role (and looking nice naked) and deaths that aren't too bad either (the "locker crush" is pretty cool).

Followed by Prom Night III:The Last Kiss.
