2000 - 92m.

"What If..." drama/horror film set in 1921 Berlin that asks the question of "what if" director F.W. Murnau (played with aplomb by John Malkovich) had hired a real vampire in Max Schreck (the amazing, and robbed at Oscar-time, Willem Dafoe) to play the bloodsucker role in his 1922 classic film Nosferatu.

This twisted and macabre film tells of their relationship, Schreck's bloodlust and Murnau's sink into madness (as witnessed in the finale).

This is one nice looking film with moody production design and a muted yet extremely interesting premise. But really it's the two leads who make this movie as grand as it is. Malkovich gets crazy with the best of them and Dafoe (who has never been better) has to rely on his facial expressions (under heavy make-up) to make Schreck a menacing and quite convincing character.

For fans of horror films who respect the classics and want to see something much more different than usual; for non-horror fans just for the engrossing story and acting.
