1988 - 98m.

Eleven years after the original cult classic the guys reponsible for it get back together for this purposely cornball sequel that has the evil scientist Dr. Gangreen (John Astin, who's great) up in his mansion turning tomatoes (which are outlawed) into human muscle-men and other things using music and radioactive waste. It's up to Anthony Starke, his best buddy George Clooney (in a very early role) and the tomato he loves (in human form as the pleasing to look at Karen Mistal) to try and stop him.

Lightweight and pretty dopey stuff starts on the right foot opening with an "afternoon movie" TV station sequence and feels much more intentionally cheesy than the original but like the first one it does run out of steam and features a weak finale.

Still; there's a hilarious "product placement" sequence, Steve Lundquist is amusing as Gangreen's sidekick "Igor" (a pretty boy who wants to be a news reporter) and the one joke premise gets way more mileage than you'd expect. Better than the original and okay viewing for B-movie fans.

This promises "Killer Tomatoes Go To France" in the end credits but that'd actually turn out to be the fourth entry.

Followed by Killer Tomatoes Strike Back!
