After 1985's Transmutations this turned out to be the second film made based on the work of Clive Barker (he wrote the screenplay here) and has the people of a small Irish village being slaughtered quite efficiently by the ancient demon "Rawhead" who was unleashed from under a huge stone pillar in a farmer's field during a lightning storm.
Barker has said he's not pleased with the way this movie turned-out and you can see why after glancing Peter Litten's pretty crappy creature effects (the first appearance of "Rawhead" is completely laughable and looks like it belongs in a Toho movie) and the fact the movie plods at times. But this is generally an okay effort if you expect little and can forgive the junky creature (which lessens the attempts at suspense this almost pulled-off at times).
While the finale is totally "blah" and a sequel set-up lame; you can tell that there's a better movie hiding somewhere within this one. Barker dislikes it, but is partly to blame - he did write the script after all.
