Agreeable mix of espionage thriller and underwater horror flick (with a dash of Deep Rising thrown in) starts with a Russian sub crashing in 1962 and spilling some toxic barrels into the ocean.
Thirty-eight years later there's an embassy bombing (that has an action sequence that boasts plenty of fairly big-scale explosions) and a green CIA agent is given the task of transporting the terrorist (a decently slimy Ravil Isyanov) to America on a sub filled with a rowdy crew and sexy scientist (the delectable Carolyn Lowery) only to run into a really mad and really, really big octopus.
Alright folks, guess what? This is actually pretty fun viewing. Director Eyres keeps it moving at a quick pace, the acting is competent, the premise rises a tad above the usual of its type and the octopus effects (all CGI) are actually pretty darn good.
Sure the finale is a little sloppy and you'll wonder why the government doesn't monitor the location of their subs better but this has more postives than negatives and makes for decent entertainment.
Isyanov is given quite a send-off.
Followed by a sequel.
