Director/writer Wes Craven imagines this story that has teenager Heather Langenkamp and her friends being haunted by dreams of a claw-handed, burned killer called Freddy Krueger only for their dreams to creep into reality every time they close their eyes. It’s up to Langenkamp to try and stop this undead baddie.
At a time where slasher movies glutted the horror market this was a breath of fresh air with an imaginative script, young lead actress who carries it fine and a villian who would quickly ascend to pop culture anti-hero status. While seen today some of the dialogue is dated and with some forgiveable plot holes there’s no denying the creativity shown in the nightmare sequences (Amanda Wyss’ wall drag is one of the many memorable scenes; that includes Johnny Depp’s blood shower also) and the fact Craven was obviously onto something since this film spawned sequels, a television series and much other merchandise.
No horror fan can do without this and the DVD box-set is a must since it contains all the series in DVD clarity (you can see the make-up great now) and a bonus disc that gives you behind-the-scenes, TV appearances and people reflecting on the series impact (including Clive Barker and other celebrities).
