Director/writer Stephen Sommers' (Deep Rising) remake of the 1932 classic original set in 1923 has treasure hunter Brendan Fraser leading an English brother and his librarian sister on a quest to an Ancient Egyptian lost city which houses the mummified remains of an evil high priest. Well guess what happens when they accidently resurrect our good old mummy buddy.
Action packed with some high-class special effects this is an entertaining throw-back to the old matinees with a touch of Indiana Jones thrown into the mix. Fraser makes an affable hero and there's a lot of amusing moments but it's the effects that rule the show here, and boy are they a doozy.
Arnold Vosloo (who was lame in the Darkman video sequels) is appropriately nasty here and Sommers has created an enjoyable horror effort that doesn't rely on plentiful gore or "hip" in-jokes to work.
Followed by The Mummy Returns.
