Every horror fan loves a good zombie romp once in a while and for the most part, Junk, delivers.

An eerie beginning shows us a green fluid called "DNX" (shades of Re-Animator here, folks) that has the ability to bring the dead back to life, but there's obviously problems as our quite naked female subject soon is chowing down on the doctor and his assistant. From there we're introduced to a gang of amateur robbers who rip-off a jewelry store and agree to meet with the Yakuza in an abandoned old Military lab. I'll give you one guess what the lab was. That's right, the experiments with "DNX" just happened to go on in said lab so the gangsters, thieves and some Army personnel who are flying in to destroy the place end-up becoming items on the zombies' menu.

Starting off quickly (with the attack and robbery scenes) this isn't able to keep up its rapid fire pace but it does move by pretty quickly and despite having the most basic of premises, suffering from weak acting from the English cast members and having some so-so dialogue; this is an entertaining time with lots of decent gore effects (including a cool "pipe" moment early on and awesome "shovel" moment in the finale), solid direction, a suitably spooky location and the appealing Miwa Yanagizawa (who spends most of the movie either naked on in tight leather) as the intelligent lead zombie.

It's not the greatest zombie movie ever made, and it does feel derrative at times, but it's a good way to spend just under ninety minutes. (Chris Hartley, 5/1/04)
