2005 - 80m.

Jolly Roger: Massacre At Cutter's Cove is another, um, cookie "cutter" B-movie from the folks at The Asylum, but at least it kicks-off decently and throws out enough smirky humour, skin, and gore effects to be a watchable time.

Three high school couples off camping for the weekend stumble upon a treasure chest on the shore and when they open it - and throw the skull inside into the Ocean - they accidentally unleash undead pirate Jolly Roger who first slaughters four of the group (which results in an impressive four deaths in the first 15 minutes with one emulating the "tent pole" scene in Jason Goes To Hell and another involving a roasted marshmellow) before heading into town to claim the heads of the descendants of his crew members that betrayed him years prior. It's up to the two survivors (Tom Nagel and Kristina Korn) and the local sheriff (Thomas Downey) to try and stop Jolly Roger's killing spree.

As with their prior film, Death Valley: The Revenge Of Bloody Bill, this is The Asylum's attempt to create a horror franchise along the lines of Freddy in the Nightmare On Elm Street movies and they even go as far as to give their villain a slew of wisecracks after each death; but of the two baddies I'd rather see another installment from "Bloody Bill" (in fact I recently read that Death Valley 2 is going into production) than "Jolly Roger" because, honestly, there's only so many pirate themed jokes a guy can take.

If you go into this expecting nothing more than a cheesy time peppered with a few alright deaths then you should be able to forgive the extremely thin plot (we don't even learn how/why Jolly Roger is doing it until it's almost over) and such groanable moments as our hero picking a lock with the clasp of a bra and the fact our heroine does a pencil rubbing of a tablet of names when she could've just as easily written them down; but if you have a low tolerance for dopey B-movies then you might be better off skipping this.

Check out that badly synched demise of good 'old Mr. Roger in the finale - it's pretty amusing.

DVD INFORMATION

Picture Ratio: 1.85:1 Widescreen.

Picture Quality: This stands out as one of The Asylum's better transfers as the picture stays nice and solid throughout with a clean looking picture (there's a few barely noticeable blips of grain) although the focus seemed a bit "off" for a few seconds one or twice.

Extras: The features here are pretty slender with a trailer (plus trailers for War Of The Worlds, Intermedio, Alien Abduction, and Lethal Eviction), two deleted scenes (the bar one should have not been cut as it makes that sequence make more sense), a brief "making of" featurette than runs a mere 5 minutes; and an okay commentary track with co-writer Miller and stars Nagel and Giles that is about as hollow sounding as most do from this company.
