1955 - 80m.

Horror/sci-fi classic based on the magazine serial by Jack Finney, this stars Kevin McCarthy as a doctor in the small town of Santa Mira who finds himself trying to convince authorities aliens are taking over the bodies of townsfolk (by growing copies of them in pea pod-like cocoons).

Told in flashback this tells of his discovery and eventual escape from a town filled with alien beings who are trying to turn him into a "pod person" as well.

About as melodramatic as most horror flicks of the 50's but this is better than a lot thanks to having a great mood (it gives off a good feeling of being "trapped"), a fine lead performance by McCarthy (who'd go on to a fine career as a character actor), the famous freeway scene and a downbeat ending. I would've liked a bit more motive for the invaders but as is this is a watchable and entertaining effort and one of the more highly regarded genre pictures of its decade.

Remade in 1978 and 1993.

Directed By: Don Siegel.
Written By: Daniel Mainwaring.

Starring: Kevin McCarthy, Dana Wynter, Larry Gates, King Donovan.
