Sequel to the 2000's cult hit, Ginger Snaps, is lacking the strong feminist themes and heady scripting of the original to take a more straightforward horror approach, but it's still a quite watchable time.
Starting up pretty much where the original ended this has Brigitte (Emily Perkins, who does well again) being haunted by visions of her sister Ginger (Katharine Isabelle) while trying to keep her impending werewolf transformations at bay and running from a male wolf that wants her for a mate. She ends-up at an isolated care/rehab facility where she has to try and keep her animalistic urges at bay and try to escape. Soon she does with the help of younger paitent "Ghost" (newcomer Taitana Maslany, who makes a good impression) and they hole-up at her new friends grandmother's cabin for a showdown with the pursing wolfman.
Director Brett Sullivan (who edited the first film) brings a good style to this sequel, I love the hospital setting and there's still a nice streak of sarcastic and witty humour carried over from the original (check out that "group therapy" dream sequence for a good intentional laugh) but like I said, this is a more "standard" horror flick than the first and it sort of stumbles in the last third when they escape.
Still, it's pretty enjoyable with a strong musical score, enough alright gore and a really twisted finale. Also due this year is another sequel (or prequel, as it were), Ginger Snaps Back, and if it manages to be as acceptable as this follow-up was I'll be looking forward to it.
Followed by Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning.
