1994 - 126m.

Director Tim Burton's lovingly done (yet unlikely) biopic of Edward D. Wood, Jr. (director of Plan 9 From Outer Space and constantly dubbed as "the worst director of all-time") stars Johnny Depp as the wide-eyed Wood who struggles to get his films made and they usually turn out to be bad.

This follows his career from his first film (the cross-dressing Glenn Or Glenda?) to the premiere of Plan 9 and stays away from his later years where he'd end-up making a whole slew of even worse nudie films. Burton also focusses on the friendship between Wood and one-time Hollywood star Bela Lugosi (who at the time was an addict and is portrayed excellently by an unrecognizable Martin Landau - who won a best supporting actor Oscar for his work).

While this doesn't give a heck of a lot of insight into the man it's evident that this is a film made by a bad movie fan for bad movie fans and it's always nice to see someone you wouldn't expect to get recognition getting it. Depp plays Wood as a bumbling charmer who's true to his friends and the cast is filled with name actors (who all do well in their smaller roles) and you almost get the feeling Burton relates to his subject because they both feel/felt like misunderstood artists.

As for being the "worst director" that ever existed; I'd have to disagree - sure his films are bad but that's because Wood was just inept at his craft and only liked to do one take of a scene to keep costs low.
