Muddled and completely unconvincing adaptation of the Stephen King novel has a group of childhood friends (Jason Lee, Thomas Jane, Damian Lewis and Timothy Olyphant) going off to a remote cabin in the woods during a stormy winter only for them to get caught up with aliens and an out-of-this-world virus that is infecting humans, implanting a worm-like parasite (which quite stupidly comes out of their derriere) and having to use their sketchily explained telekinesis they received when they saved a handicapped boy from bullies twenty-two years prior. Also on the case is Morgan Freeman (who's barely in it despite being top billed) as leader of an elite top secret Government squad that's been hunting aliens for twenty-five years.
Despite some decent effects (though the final beasts are laughable) this just doesn't work because not only it the whole premise dopey it's script is silly as Hell, packed with dumb one-liners (poor Jason Lee has to spout a bunch of senseless lines), has a few pretty pointless flashbacks to their childhood and is also just plain stupid. Nevermind that it runs on about forty-five minutes too long.
The logic here is awful and the explanation for the whole thing just sucks. Throw in the unintentionally funny fact that Lewis speaks in a British accent after being taken over by the alien leader, get ready to groan when Jane talks into a gun like a phone, try not to wince during the lame helicopter assault on the alien ship and check out that really lousy finale.
Probably one of the worst King adaptations on record which is odd since co-writer William Goldman is responsible for adapting Misery.
Just horrid.
