Oh yeah! Sometimes we all need a little low-budget movie that's undemanding, takes a campy approach and is fun to watch. And Drainiac! is a prime example of this.
From writer/director/fx man Piper (who's quite well known around indie horror) comes this tale of a group of teenagers who go to an old abandoned house to clean it little realizing that dwelling inside the pipes is an ancient demon that likes to use its slimy tentacles in creative ways.
This B-movie definitely looks good with fine production values and Piper handling the camera well; and though the effects are sometimes tacky they're definitely appropriate for what turns out to be a old fashioned monster movie.
Right from the humourous introduction and neato wavy credits us horror fans with an appreciation for none-too-serious homages know exactly what to expect. And this delivers with a well suited musical score, cool "reverse sucking" effects, some juvenile and stupid comedy that actually works and a baddie that knows how to dish out the gruesome fun.
We see tentacles snag a rat, creep up on people and (in what is my favourite moment) come out of a toilet to "grab" hold of a bully who deserves his fate. Plus there's some pretty neat stop motion demon spiders, a naked woman who rips her face in two and a cool electricity effect at the end.
Sure this gets to be a bit overdone in the final third and the acting is sometimes so-so, but it looks like they had a blast making this and we all need a little bit of mindless fun once in a while, don't we?
