2005 - 87m.

Maybe, it's just that I'm getting older but when I start giving consistently bad reviews of movies loaded with gratuitous nudity, I wonder what my problem is. I don't think that I am getting more conservative, it is just that some movies coming out these days consist only of nudity and there is no entertainment value tying it all together. There is no doubt that naked flesh is an important and expected part of b-movies but I find that some directors know how to work it into the plot so that it has the desired effect while others just pile it on and forget about all of the integral elements that make a b-movie fun. Although classic b-movies like Nightmare Sisters and Attack of the 60 Foot Centerfold have their fair share of naked babes, they also have a style that provides much more entertainment than bouncing boobs alone.

The premise of Demon Sex is that Brinke Stevens is the head of a clan of alien women who are trying to hatch some sort of devil spawn from a human host. To do this, they recruit a stripper and her pregnant friend and they all live in a house in Los Angeles. Surrounding this minimal plot point are a a number of useless stripping and sex scenes that really have nothing to do with anything and consist of extended lingering shots that at times made me feel like I was watching an educational film on gynecology (especially when we get close-ups of a pregnant woman giving birth). Writer/director Greg Lewolt attempts to make things more interesting than they are by incorporating a large amount of techno-babble but this just ends up making the first ten minutes of this film one of the least interesting introductions I have seen in recent memory.

Brinke Stevens is totally wasted in this flick. Her filmography in recent years shows that she is obviously a supporter of low budget horror filmmaking but also shows that she seems to appear in everything and anything that a "friend" asks her to be in. With friends like these, I don't think Brinke needs enemies. I can't knock Brinke because she still always brings a good performance, I just wish that she would follow Debbie Rochon's lead and try to contribute to some more credible projects rather than just try to help everyone who calls or e-mails her. Brinke is a talented woman who certainly has a name for herself and she should have the ability to recognize crap when she sees it and turn it down.

Another thing that I have noticed since Seduction Cinema became a b-movie force is that the nudity is becoming a lot more graphic than it used to be. Gone is the titillating innocence of the old days and this has since been replaced by vaginal close-ups that are unnecessary and unappealing. While Demon Sex is certainly not a porno, it is much more Hustler than Playboy if you know what I mean. This, I find, crosses a line that doesn't make much sense to me. Lewolt would probably make a lot more money if he just made a straight-up triple X flick but perhaps doesn't want to be associated with the stigma. When the other aspects of a decent exploitation flick are non-existent, why be in such denial. The presence of Brinke Stevens and some goth chicks does not automatically make a b-movie. It is in the attitude. Maybe Lewolt should watch some Troma and older Fred Olen Ray movies and see how it's done. Lewolt also has no idea how to direct an effective strip scene and you will be yearning for Maria Ford to show up and wanting to send him a copy of Showgirls for research purposes. Look for genre screenwriter Sean O'Bannon as the guy that Brinke kills in the bathtub. (Josh Pasnak, 6/23/07)

DVD INFORMATION
Video Outlaw/EI - February 21, 2006

Picture Ratio: 1.78:1 Widescreen.

Picture Quality: It's widescreen but it looks like a cheap, shot-on-video porno.

Extras: First up, we get an 11-minute short film from 2002 entitled "Demon Treasure" that was directed by Lewolt and climaxes with a naked Brinke Stevens covered in blood. This was ok I guess for what it was and also features b-movie personality Johnny Legend. Next, we have an 8-minute short film called "Demon Familiars" that features Brinke in a lesbian sequence with a blonde and a dominatrix. This was directed by photographer Ward Boult and features a soundtrack by The Genitorturers that is the only reason it is worth watching. Finally, we get a 10-minute stag short from 1964 entitled "Mama's Dirty Drink" that features a woman stripping on a couch and has nothing to do with the rest of the disc. There is a also a trailer for Demon Sex.
