1989 - 82m.

A homage to George A. Romero's zombie trilogy, this independent effort from writer/director J.R. Bookwalter has a group of elite special forces zombie hunters called the "Zombie Squad" having to take on the flesh-eaters and a zombie loving religious cult in a future that's overrun with the undead.

Ambitious and well-plotted effort marked Bookwalter's first movie and is still probably his best to this day.

Starts with an exciting opening (that has a very good credit sequence showing the zombies taking over), has good touches of humour (I love when the zombie goes to rent Dawn Of The Dead) and with lots of decent gore (a dismembered zombie head eats some fingers only for them to pop out the neck stump!); you could say that this is most likely the best indie zombie movie ever made.

Despite some wooden dialogue and a slipshod finale this works well thanks to the fact we know the people behind it have great respect for the genre and have worked their hardest at making a pleasing film for fellow fans.

Very worthy of its cult status and that's even if you forget Evil Dead director Sam Raimi helped to finance it. Highly recommended.
