Science professor Sam Groom and health inspector Sara Botsford find their lives in danger when the city they live is overrun with rats that have grown the size of small dogs after being exposed to steroid-tinged grain (if they became that way because of them eating it or when they burn it it's never said).
So-so horror effort from director Clouse, who definitely knows how to make martial arts movies (witness the classic Enter The Dragon and Black Belt Jones), but stumbles a tad when helming this giant rat flick. While this is, for the most part, watchable and starts to gain ground in the finale where rats attack a bowling alley, movie house showing Bruce Lee movies (an in-joke involving director Clouse) and subway tunnel; it suffers from really cheap effects (which are actually rubber heads and disguised dachshund dogs) which are poor enough to effectively squash the mild suspense that builds at times.
Lots of blood, giant rubbery rats and mayhem even if it's nothing more than average.
One of the many of its type to come out in the early 80's (and definitely not the worst - that'd probably be Rats:Night Of
Terror).
