Director Stephen Hopkins makes a fairly impressive debut (before moving onto Hollywood fare like Lost In Space) in this taut horror/thriller that has some Aussie teens breaking into the security system of a department store and intending on spending the night getting caught in a game of cat 'n' mouse with a demented policeman (played very well by Steven Grives) who stalks them throughout the building and is slowly losing his grip on reality.
Competently made and decent entertainment has Hopkins using his camera extremely well giving us lots of tracking shots and moments of muted suspense to chew on. Grives makes a good villain and his character is given much more depth than usual when, after accidently killing one of the kids (and the only death in the movie), a look of utter shock and regret is on his face.
Sure there's a couple of logic lapses; but it's all forgivable because this is an above average time that's refreshingly devoid of heavy violence and exploitation elements. Recommended.
