Comedy troupe Broken Lizard had a minor hit with their last film, 2001's Super Troopers, and they've returned for this supposed "spoof" of slasher flicks that is played quite seriously during its horror scenes and doesn't have quite enough "spoof" for it to work.
Bill Paxton plays a Jimmy Buffet-like washed-up, alcoholic singer who runs a island getaway resort. People go there to have fun, get drunk and perhaps even have some wild sex; but things aren't so peachy because there's a masked killer running around knocking-off staff members and the occassional guest.
Passable stuff has the Broken Lizard guys turning in likeable enough performances (Steve Lemme is particularly amusing as "Latin lover" Juan) and there's a few alright laughs here (the best being the "Pac-Man" moment); but it's just not consistently funny and most of the humour relies on weak sex jokes.
They've nailed the elements that are supposed to be present in a slasher movie (that is ample nudity and somewhat bloody deaths) without giving it the sarcastic and smart-assed edge that any horror movie parody should have - and it just is odd seeing the film shift from outright comedy to stalking scenes that are played with very little comedic tone.
If you're a fan of the Broken Lizard guys, then chances are you'll enjoy this; otherwise this is a passable waste of time. (Chris Hartley, 6/23/04)
