This is the epitome of classic horror, Bride Of Frankenstein is not only is a great sequel, put it actually surpasses the original film. Even so far as the other Universal films of this era were packed with memorable performances, Bride delivers more immortal characters and quotes than the rest combined. This may well be the best monster movie of all time, but the question is, is it a horror movie? Without writing an essay on it, it's hard to classify Bride Of Frankenstein as a horror movie. It doesn't do what a horror film is supposed to do, it doesn't really even try, it's just a great story.
Karloff truly shines in this film and proves for certain why he is the greatest genre actor of all time. The Monster finally gets a chance to live, he laughs, cries, and becomes more human than one would think possible. For those doubting his acting ability or the validity of these films, I dare you to watch his prayer scene with the blind man and not feel for both characters. I don't want to get off on a rant here, but this is what the genre today is missing.
The story picks up just before the end of the original film and takes it in it's own direction. The Monster survives the burning mill and goes off looking for peace in the forest. He eventually finds a blind hermit who teaches him to talk and the two become quite close. Like everything else, this is soon taken from him and he falls under the influence of the menacing Dr. Pretorious. Pretorious convinces the Monster to seek out his "father" and have him create a bride.
It's impossible to review this film without mentioning the fine performances by both Colin Clive as the melancholy Henry Frankenstein and Ernest Thesiger as Dr. Pretorious. In any other film, these two would have totally dominated the entire thing, but as it is all three men (counting Karloff) deliver an unforgettable film.
Followed by Son Of Frankenstein and a few other universal efforts. Countless imitations and a remake (The Bride, 1985) followed as well. (Red)
