2001 - 95m.
Spain-USA

A pre-title sequence (that sports poor CGI effects) has a mysterious cloaked ship crashing in the remote jungle. An American stealth bomber pilot who just happened to eject to that exact spot when his plane malfunctioned sees an alien being killed by a giant bug-like creature. After that it's all by-the-book as a group of explorers made up of doctors, former Army soldiers, the expected spider expert and a plucky heroine (who's on hand to pilot the plane) also manage to crash land on the island (something to do with the alien forces causing planes to mess up) only to fall prey to the giant alien spider of the title.

Pretty dull starting and much too talky for its own good; this is a totally inane horror flick that's loaded with poor acting (especially Jose Sancho as the head doctor who's accent is thick enough and talks fast enough to make him hard to understand at times), mostly shoddy effects (though the spider does look okay at times) and the fact that it's so boring that even during the "exciting" finale I was yawning.

Quite painful stuff from veteran director Jack Sholder (who is to blame for the rotten first Wishmaster sequel also) but at least the little bit of nastiness involving ticks bursting out from one soldier is pretty cool.
