Infamous entry in the nunsploitation/possession/satanism genre finds Satanic going-ons in a convent when new-comer orphan Justine arrives and hooks up with odd-girl out Alucarda (who's mother too had died when she was young) in this Mexican horror outing.
Not much in the plot department going on here, Alucarda could best be described in the "style over substance" category as the thinly written script (based on the novella Carmilla) is really only a crutch to loosely tie in "shocking" scenes and religious mumbo jumbo.
Some of the images are effectively memorable - the scene where a naked, assumed dead Justine rises from a blood filled coffin and a pretty nifty beheading come to mind - and the quote on the DVD cover (by Psychotronic Video scribe Michael J. Weldon) claiming a lot of nudity,
blood and screaming isn't lying. That still doesn't make this anything more than some amusing cheap thrills with hallucinagenic orgies, lesbianism and bloodsucking.
The double exorcism scene is pretty hokey and over the top and the fact that they try to pass off both leads as young girls is unconvincing (there's no way they look 15!).
Fans of this stuff will no doubt eat it up but all others are likely better skipping this sermon. (Derek Carlson, 6/1/04)
